So I’m planning a couple quickie woodworking projects, making some wall-mounted and free-standing magnetic knife racks.
(Pictured: $2.99 Harbor Freight rack)
I’ve got everything I need except the magnets, and I’ve looked at a couple possible sources online for neodymium bar magnets, but I’m not sure who/where might be the best to go with.
Any of y’all ever buy some bulk magnets from a place you’d recommend?
Edit: so far I’m thinking magnet4sale.com and appliedmagnets.com’s surplus sale.

Buy the ones from Harbor Fright and throw away the backing and start over again in your workshop.

American Science & Surplus often has stuff like that, but their stock is inconsistent. Tons of weirdo hobby supplies & random stuff; some of it is Harbor Freight-grade, but you can find some gems there. Or junk that you didn’t know you needed, until you saw it.
(
I’m disappointed that the URL isn’t ASS.com, but oh well. I’m sure that got snapped up early on.)

I’ve considered that.

Magnet Source
https://www.magnetsource.com/collections/neodymium-l1
I source from these guys at work for my job and they’re super easy to work with and manufacture their own product
Home Depot and other retailers resell them, but theyre cheaper direct, get a quote from them if you’re doing real bulk (100+ pieces). If you poke around their site you can find a real catalog.
They also do free samples if you call and ask.

Maybe dado a track into a piece of nice wood and mount HF’s magnet inside of that.

You can sometimes get the Harbor Freight magnets for free with a coupon.

I dunno if you really need neodymium magnets for this sort of thing. You might find them to be a lot stronger than you’ d like , unless you’re trying t o hang something heavier than usual . I have some regular mag bars and they hold basic hand tools (like the ones you have pictured above ) just fine. I imagine that strong neodymium magnets would put up much more of a fight when retrieving tools ...

I’ve tried the HF magnets and was not happy. Not enough holding power for the tools I was trying to mount.

Since it’ll be pulling through *some* thickness of wood (gonna be trial and error), I’m willing to err on the side of too-strong, and having a slightly shallower channel for the magnets. It’s for knife racks, rather than tools, and the magnets won’t be in direct contact with the knife blades. Gotta keep that VG10 steel pretty.
